A section of Busia residents have been forced to source sanitizers from the neighbouring country, Uganda, due to scarcity of the product in shops and supermarkets at Busia border.

George Odhiambo is one of the residents who could not get the sanitizer at the border and was forced to cross to Uganda to collect them following a directive by the government that all public places should have sanitizers as a way of curbing the deadly corona virus.

According to Odhiambo, most of the residents rushed to purchase sanitizers immediately after the directive was issued, leaving the shelves empty.

“People rushed to get the sanitizers after the directive was issued. Today, the shelves are empty and we have resorted to cross the border to get them,” said Odhiambo

Busia ACK church pastor Stephen  Manya also said that the church was forced to access the product from Uganda as they could not access them in shops and supermarkets.

“We were forced to go to Uganda because we could not find even one bottle of sanitizer in all the shops and supermarkets here,” he said.

The residents are now hopeful that the product will be availed in plenty for everyone to have access in a bid to prevent the deadly disease.

On their part, sellers have acknowledged the scarcity and have requested suppliers to  avail the product in quantities that meet the current demands in the market.

“The demand is too high now and suppliers should ensure we get enough quantities so that we can avail to the customers who really need the product now,” John Omollo, one of the shop attendants said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta issued this directive on Sunday after two corona virus cases were confirmed in Kenya, increasing the number to three.

Other directives issued include minimizing congestion in public transport, use of cashless transactions, employees to work from home, suspension of learning and those who travelled into the country within the last fourteen days to self-quarantine.
